Some Measurable Improvement

The task, industry officials agreed, is convincing the consumer there’s some measurable improvement.

“Whirlpool is not interested in fuzzy logic for fuzzy logic’s sake,” said David Burkhardt, senior engineer in corporate technology development. “We’re interested in consumer benefits.”

According to Mark Schreck, GE Appliances’ vice president of technology, electronics in general and fuzzy logic in particular “will play an increasingly important role in the near future, driven primarily by two things.” One is a drive to conserve natural resources; the other is consumers’ need to vote with their dollars for ease of use and simplicity of product.

Repairing an electronic control panel is costly

Laundry is an obvious example, with a 15-or 20-year history in moisture sensors, he said. One of the negatives is consumers’ fear that repairing an electronic control panel is costly.

Lauren Frazier, manager of GE’s electronics-development group, noted that “fuzzy logic opens up many vistas,” such as adapting the operation to varying cleaning loads. “Conservation of water and electrical energy is going to be relentless,” Frazier said. “The better the control system can adapt and provide for widely variable consumer usage, the more efficiently the appliance can operate.”

Microwave ovens became the pioneer appliance in establishing touch controls because there was little difference in price, noted Anne Howard, director of marketing in Sharp’s appliance division. Fuzzy logic in microwave ovens, widely available in Japan, hasn’t migrated here.

“The major issue is the cost benefit to consumers,” she said. “There’s an awful lot of time and effort that goes into developing the software.” Eventually “I think it will happen.

IntelliSense is not the first major appliance to use fuzzy logic, that confusingly named application that lets a machine balance and choose among variables in its operations. A Looming Practical Necessity

Maytag’s contribution to this future shock, IntelliSense, selects a cycle based on the previous 36 washes, when the machine last ran and how many times the door was opened since the last washing. Once a cycle begins, a sensor in the pump determines how much food soil and detergent are swimming about. Other microelectronics monitor wash-arm rotation and water temperature, and the machine keeps adjusting the program throughout the cycle.

A Looming Practical Necessity

Such a machine is not a gimmick or a sales tool. It’s a looming practical necessity.

The white-goods industry in particular has been preoccupied with numerous conservation issues prompting government regulations. Those yellow tags on products in stores reflect increasingly stringent energy-efficiency ratings. Manufacturers must meet these numbers even as they are forced to give up their most efficient refrigerant and insulation, chlorofluorocarbon, which will be banned internationally next year because it destroys atmospheric ozone.

Manufacturers regard the government as a “partner prodding energy regulations and therefore product development,” said Richard Haines, president of Maytag and Admiral Products.

“I see two hurdles, and energy is the lesser one,” he predicted. “Water management [already a big concern in the western United States] is going to be a significant issue for urban and suburban areas. Therein lies to me the thing that will have the biggest impact on our industry.”

Curran Cotton, Maytag’s vice president of research and development, agreed. “Unfortunately, the consumer isn’t aware yet we’re going to face water conservation,” face water conservation,” he said. “It’s coming, so we’d better be ready.”

High-end European

Among Maytag’s claims for IntelliSense are that the dishwasher consumes an average of 6.5 gallons of water per cycle, against 9 gallons for American-made competitors. High-end European imports average 5.79 gallons, but they lack some automatic cycles and may require additional rinsing water, according to Maytag. Other vital statistics are $44 of yellow-tag energy use a year–21 percent better than the current Department of Energy standard–versus $44.67 for the Europeans, and 40 minutes compared to 63 minutes for an average wash.
